...How do you make your resolution a reality?

Tis the season … for resolutions.  Many of us make them and many of us abandon them by the end of January.   How do you keep working on a resolution?  Here are several ideas that might help you achieve the resolutions you set.

1.  Make it something you really want.  We all want things but the question is – how badly do you want this?  Is this something that will make you more successful, make you more money? How important is this to you?

2.  Be specific- this one sounds simple enough but sometimes when we aren’t very specific when we decide to accomplish a goal.  It helps if you make a plan to go along with the resolution.  This helps break it down into steps that you can follow.

3.  Make notes. I have found that when dieting (yes it will be on my list for this year again!) if I keep a food diary I understand what I’ve eaten that day and what I can have without messing up my diet.  You become more aware of what you are doing when you focus on it by writing.

4.  Look for support.  Whatever you are trying to achieve it never hurts to have someone in your corner cheering you on. It helps on those days when you just don’t feel like you want to stay on track.

Taking Stock

As we enter a new year, I find myself taking stock of the previous one.  It’s time to look at what I’ve accomplished, what I didn’t get done and look ahead to what I want to do in the New Year.  I think it’s important to list the accomplishments you’ve had, looking at what you’ve done. We get so busy during the year that it’s hard for us to really celebrate what we’ve done in the moment.

Taking time to look at all the hard work you’ve put into your job or you home life helps you to understand where the year has gone and what you have to show for it.  It’s also a time to look at what I didn’t accomplish last year and what I either want to let go or put back on my list for this year. Sometimes we have a lot we want to accomplish either written down or in our heads.

So what did you do last year? Do you have things you are really proud of- things you wish you’d gotten around to doing and things that really didn’t matter as much as you thought they did?

Small Business Resolutions for the New Year

A lot of people feel the need to set up New Year’s resolutions.  I have to admit I was always one of those people.  But as I grow older (and hopefully wiser) I realize that setting goals just at the beginning of a year just doesn’t help me.  A better way to obtain your goals is to look at what your small business needs to accomplish on a quarterly basis.  BizWorks residential members have a unique experience of being assigned a mentoring team that meets on a quarterly basis. This team is made up of professionals in the community.

We set quarterly goals throughout the year and the member has to report back on what they have accomplished or have not and why.  So what do you do if you don’t have a BizWorks mentoring team?  How about making yourself a quarterly list of goals and setting a time to review them?  You can set up weekly, as well as monthly, goals in order to keep yourself on track.  If you feel you might not keep up with it find a buddy who is also a small business owner and have them participate in the goal setting for each of your businesses.  Each of you can talk about what you have accomplished on a quarterly basis.  Sometimes being responsible to someone other than ourselves helps keep us on track to meet our goals and resolutions.
